Özgür Korkmazgil

18+

+18, an exhibition of Özgür Korkmazgil’s interpretations of  “pornography” will be on view between 09 – 30 January, 2010 at Casa Dell’Arte Gallery in Istanbul.
In 18+, Ozgur Korkmazgil is tackling the issues surrounding the concept of ‘pornography’. According to the artist all the concepts that  were created by homo sapiens, are being restored in content today. The human being, as he’s trying to deepen his perspective, ends up getting more and more superficial. This rupture brings us various sicknesses together with new, changing concepts. New sicknesses that we feel but aren’t able to identify, sicknesses that terrorize the human being..
This exhibition indicates the renovation of the concept of pornography. While the concepts of the pornography change, the concept of sexuality changes as well. Pornography is not a concept that only depends on sexuality anymore. For instance, the war that we were presented with as the Gulf War, created an active and passive pornographic situation. The images of the war were presented to the whole world at the same time with no protection in mind for any viewer. If these images weren’t pornographic then what were they? The artist is trying to understand pornography and explore this transformation rather than  criticising it.
18+ exhibition consists of work in different media. Large canvases and large surfaces that were painted with different methods. The surfaces painted by transparent colors coupled with the designed backgrounds, highlight the plasticity of the work. The exhibition of assertive compositions, for the first time in Turkey, is supported by a 3-D video that supports the concept.
