THE SPARROW LANE

Holly Andres, in her series "Sparrow Lane" takes us on a playful journey where we delightedly follow four golden haired young girls as they skip from room to room and to the woods in their quest for hidden knowledge. Our adventure starts with the very seductive image of a pink chair sprawled on the lawn surrounded by cherry blossoms. The story and the symbolism continues as we move through corridors, equally seductive, laden with gold locks and prettiest of wallpapers. Holding us by the hand are Lewis Carroll, Henry James and Alfred Hitchcock. As the Alice in Wonderland with dark circles under her eyes goes through the house with her companions, the secret lurks in a room, between the layers of a pretty dress, among the feathers of a cushion or in a glowing drawer whose contents remain unknown to us. Andres' scenario is so expertly concocted that right at the moment when we decide the mystery will never be unveiled, we also come to understand that there is no mystery. We start seeing our own reflections in the mirrors, recognizing our own faces in the photographs on the wall; suddenly the story that so enchantingly lures us   in becomes all too familiar. It is the memory of a secret garden, of that very surreal period of adolescence during which we all diligently pursue the ultimate question of who we are, totally unaware of the fact that the quest will eventually become the answer.
