WHISPERING WATERS

Danielle Kwaaitaal's work is an ode to the female body in all its lightness and purity. Her models, beautiful women's bodies in the dark, elegantly float underwater in search of an identity that has been tampered with at every chance for centuries by society, by the media and by the fashion industry. Kwaaitaal attempts to subvert this beguiling campaign by using the same means as her adversary, digitally manipulating her images for the purpose of eliminating socially-constructed presumptions and implications burdening the female image. In this non-linear and dreamlike story of a struggle for the female self and individuality, the elements of time and location are irrelevant. Simple, weightless, serene and poetic beauty becomes possible under Kwaaitaal's fairy tale lighting and Mada van Gaans' specially designed underwater dresses. What ensues is an encapsulating and intimate journey depicting the possibilities of new perspectives on aesthetic beauty.
